The European Commission and the High Representative officially adopted today the EU Pact for the Mediterranean, marking a strategic turning point in relations between the European Union and its Southern Neighbourhood partners.
A Renewed Vision for the Mediterranean Spac
As officially stated by the European Commission, “The Pact for the Mediterranean will step up cooperation and economic ties between the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and beyond. It will contribute to building a Common Mediterranean Space that is connected, prosperous, resilient and secure.”
The Pact is built on the principles of co-ownership, co-creation, and joint responsibility, principles that are very dear to PRIMA, which has been applying them since its creation.
PRIMA: A recognized model for integration
A particularly significant point: the Pact recognizes the pioneering role of PRIMA by mentioning to “build on PRIMA” in its actions. Since 2019, PRIMA has already been applying these co-creation principles and developing integrated solutions through the WEFE Nexus approach (Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems).
This holistic approach, which goes beyond traditional sectoral strategies, fosters resource security, sustainability and cross-cutting social objectives such as women’s empowerment and poverty reduction. The integration of the WEFE Nexus into the Pact confirms the relevance of this integrated vision for the sustainable future of the Mediterranean.
Strategic Political Support
This political recognition reinforces the vision of a future where integrated strategies will shape the sustainable development of the Mediterranean region. The Pact thus represents a unique opportunity to transform common challenges into shared opportunities, creating mutual benefits for all Mediterranean populations.
Through FUTURE4PRIMA, (CSA) funded under Horizon Europe, efforts are underway to explore the future pathways of this cooperation in a potential renewed PRIMA partnershp, building on PRIMA’s achievements and lessons learned. The PRIMA-led project contributes to shaping a renewed vision for Euro-Mediterranean R&I collaboration that aligns with the objectives of the new Pact.
