Sustainable olive farming: SUSTAINOLIVE breaks language barriers with multilingual manuals and factsheets

Published on

The PRIMA-funded SUSTAINOLIVE project (concluded) has developed an invaluable collection of educational materials now available in seven Mediterranean languages, offering knowledge on sustainable olive grove management accessible to farmers and stakeholders across the entire Mediterranean basin.

Bridging the Knowledge Gap in Multiple Languages

Recognizing that language barriers often prevent the widespread adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, SUSTAINOLIVE has prioritized accessibility by translating its key resources into seven languages spoken across Mediterranean olive-producing countries. This multilingual approach ensures that farmers from Spain to Greece, from Italy to Tunisia, can access the same high-quality information in their native language.

Two Essential Resources for the Olive Sector

1. Good Practices Manual in the Olive Grove

This comprehensive booklet serves as a practical guide for farmers transitioning to sustainable management. Written in clear, accessible language and enriched with illustrations, the manual covers:

  • Soil Health: Principles for protecting and improving soil through plant covers, organic matter incorporation, and the integration of chopped olive branches back into the soil
  • Biodiversity Enhancement: Strategies for increasing crop biodiversity to create more resilient agricultural ecosystems
  • Integrated Pest and Disease Management: Sustainable approaches to protecting olive trees while minimizing environmental impact
  • Circular Economy Practices: A dedicated section on composting olive mill by-products, turning waste into valuable resources

The manual translates complex agroecological concepts into actionable practices that farmers can implement immediately, making sustainability both understandable and achievable.

2. Practical Abstracts: Sustainability Factsheets

Developed by José Liétor from the University of Jaén, this collection of information sheets distills research findings from the SUSTAINOLIVE project into practical guidance.

Each factsheet presents data-driven recommendations based on rigorous research, demonstrating the tangible benefits of sustainable management practices. This evidence-based approach helps farmers understand not just what to do, but why these practices make economic and environmental sense.

About SUSTAINOLIVE: A Mediterranean-Wide Initiative

SUSTAINOLIVE represented a collaborative effort involving a wide rqange of Mediterranean partners, including farmers, cooperatives, research institutions, and agricultural organizations, working together to transform olive cultivation across the Mediterranean. The project’s participatory approach ensured that solutions are not only scientifically sound but also practically applicable in real-world farming contexts.

Why This Matters

Olive grove cultivation is not merely an agricultural activity in the Mediterranean, it is a cultural heritage, a landscape-defining practice, and a vital socio-economic pillar for countless communities. As climate change and environmental degradation pose increasing challenges, the need for sustainable management practices has never been more urgent.

By making these materials freely available in multiple languages, SUSTAINOLIVE democratizes access to knowledge that can help secure the future of Mediterranean olive cultivation. These resources empower farmers to adopt practices that enhance productivity while protecting the environment, ensuring that olive groves continue to thrive for generations to come.
